Reporting a workplace injury in Illinois

When you head out the door for work each morning you likely aren't thinking about suffering an injury. Safety needs to be on your mind at all times because accidents are lurking around every corner when on the job. Should you suffer an injury at work you need to report it as soon as possible to your employer so a personal injury claim can move forward in Illinois.

One of the most important things you can do if injured on the job is to seek medical attention. Whether this involves calling 911 due to the severity of the injury or simply taking yourself to a doctor, you need to be examined and treated appropriately so you can begin documenting the injury.

Your next step is to report the injury to a supervisor or the safety officer at your company. If you aren't sure where to take the report you can bring it to the human resources office. Make sure it is in writing and includes the following information:

  • Your name
  • Date of incident
  • Location of incident
  • Explanation of incident and injury suffered
  • Names of any witnesses

Try to collect any evidence that could explain how you were injured on the job. This should be done immediately after the injury occurred. If you were seriously hurt you will need to ask a coworker to collect the evidence for you.

Suffering an injury at work can lead to time missed on the job due to the severity of the injury and how much time you need to rehab the injury. Make sure it is reported immediately so that you are properly compensated.
