Top scams to watch out for in 2019

It seems like there are potential scams almost everywhere you turn. People are always looking for ways to make money and take advantage of others in ways that are illegal.

It’s important to know what to watch out for, so here are some of the top scams to be aware of:

  • Useless car warranty programs: You think you’re buying protection, but you don’t get anything for it.
  • Social media scams: People claim to be your friend in order to convince you to give them money.
  • Online dating scams: These are similar to the above, but they take place through dating apps or websites.
  • Phone scams: These often target the elderly, who may not know that the call isn’t legit.
  • Debt collection scams: If you really do owe money, you may not realize that it’s a scam until you find out your payments aren’t reducing your debt.
  • Tax collection scams: These scammers often prey on the fact that people are afraid of the Internal Revenue Service.
  • Online purchasing scams: People buy goods online more than ever, and scammers have noticed.
  • Loan scams: Watch out for “lenders” that tell you that you need to pay an upfront fee.
  • Fake sweepstakes scams: They’ll often claim you won something, but it has a fee. After you pay the fee, you find out that you never won anything in the first place.

These are just a few examples, but they help to show the risks that consumers face. If you think you have been the victim of a scam, it’s important to know what legal options you have.
